Nurse shocked to discover the dying patient she is trying to save is her brother
An emergency room nurse was desperately working to save a dying man this past week when she realized the patient was her own brother.
Jenifer Medina was working a night shift at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center when she was told a man was admitted "in bad shape" on Oct. 2, NBC LA reported.
She was asked to identify the patient by his wallet and was horrified to see that it was her own brother, Cesar.
Cesar Andreas Medina, 23, was rushed to the hospital after he was struck by an hit and run driver while skateboarding through a crosswalk.
Jenifer Medina told NBC LA she was working with her colleagues on a number of different patients when she heard a man had been admitted “in bad shape.”
When she was asked to identify the patient by his wallet, she was struck with horror. “When I saw the wallet it looked familiar, and when we [opened] it [we] saw my brother’s face on the ID,” she wrote.
Doctors were unable to save her brother, though, and he died in hospital.
After a nationwide manhunt, sheriff’s deputies arrested the alleged driver of the car, 19-year-old Andrew Michaels.
Michaels is being held on $100,000 bail and is facing vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges.
Jenifer Medina wrote that her brother was destined for big things and she cannot believe he is gone.
“Andy had so many goals for his future and was taken from all of us too soon,” she said.
