Cross River state has recorded a 70% reduction in the number of accidents that occurred during the festive season.
"We have recorded 70% reduction in road accidents,’’ FRSC Sector Commander reveals
The FRSC Sector Commander of Cross River state has revealed a 70% reduction in road accidents during the Christmas period.
Mr Ikechukwu Igwe, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), revealed this at a dinner party, where officials were gathered to celebrate last year's successes.
According to Igwe, this success is due to the special patrol held from mid-Dec. 2015 to Jan. 13, 2016.
"We started our special patrol in mid-December and ended it on Jan. 13. We are celebrating the success recorded by the patrol teams because we have every reason to give praises to God.
When I came in July 2015, the rate of road accidents was horrible. In November 19, 2015, we held a mega rally and we prayed God to help us and intervene to reduce road accidents. From December till date, we have recorded 70 per cent reduction in road accidents when compared to the same period in 2014."
While Cross River recorded a 70% reduction, a 27% reduction in road accident deaths was seen in Edo state.
However, more road traffic accidents were recorded.
“We recorded more road traffic accidents within the towns and cities than along highways in the state. The accidents result from reckless driving and disobedience to traffic light, rules and regulations. We will be more proactive in 2016 and ensure that no traffic law violator goes unpunished."
