FRSC records 27% reduction in road accident deaths

Last year, the Federal Road Safety Commission recorded a 27% reduction in the rate of road accident deaths.

In 2014, the Edo sector of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) promised to reduce accident by 20% and death by 30% in 2015.

Last year, this promise was kept as the agency recorded a 27% reduction in road accident deaths.

Sector Commander, Mr Oluwasusi Familoni, revealed that road accident deaths reduced from 222 in 2014 to 163 in 2015.

He blamed reckless driving and disobedience to traffic light, rules and regulations for these accidents, adding that the agency planned to do better, this year.

“We recorded more road traffic accidents within the towns and cities than along highways in the state. The accidents result from reckless driving and disobedience to traffic light, rules and regulations. We will be more proactive in 2016 and ensure that no traffic law violator goes unpunished."

Concerning the offenders, 1, 483 were prosecuted in Mobile Courts, where 1, 348 of them were convicted, and 135 were discharged.

Their vehicles, 5, 455 of them, were impounded.

Intensive public campaigns and timely arrival of officials to accident scenes were stated as reasons for this reduction.
