Journalist’s shocking images show SA police brutalizing Cape Town students
South Africa is witnessing a revolution reminiscent of the apartheid days as students protest over proposed tuition increase of between 10% and 12% in the country’s universities.
Imraan Christian, a photojournalist, took some images that gave a scarcely reported perspective of the protest, showing clashes between the protesters and security forces.
The images show South African police officers engaging students with extreme force.
Beginning with a reaction from the students at Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand (Wits), the protests spread to the University of Cape Town, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, Fort Hare University, University of the Free State, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and the University of Pretoria.
It is now a nationwide movement of students protesting on the streets and on social media where the #FeesMustFall and other tags are trending.
The South African government had through Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, agreed to cap the tuition fee increases at 6% for 2016 for all universities.
Students however say they don’t want any increase and vowed to shut down all tertiary institutions in the country.
Some institutions have been shut down as the students action gathered storm, storming the Parliament on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, police arrested Kgotsi Chikane, the son of anti-apartheid activist, Rev Frank Chikane.
