Anti-apartheid activist's son arrested as students storm parliament
South African police have arrested Kgotsi Chikane, the son of anti-apartheid activist, Rev Frank Chikane, after students protesting tuition fees hike stormed the Parliament on Wednesday.
Kgotsi Chikane, a student at the University of Cape Town and member of the #RhodesMustFall movement, was taken away by police in the Parliament precinct.
According to News24, the protesters were chanting " "We were here peacefully" at time of his arrest.
"One white officer... launched a stun grenade on sitting students," he said.
Even though the country's Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, on Tuesday announced that all Vice Chancellors have agreed to cap the fee hikes at 6% for 2016, students have said they do not want any increase at all.
The protest is part of a nationwide students’ action, which began at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), has led to the closure of several universities.
Kgotsi's father, Rev Chikane was a very active anti-apartheid activist who was jailed under the Terrorism Act No 83 of 1967.
Agents of the apartheid government tried to assassinate him in 1989.
