Former NSA re-arrested by DSS after release from Kuje Prison

The Department of State Services (DSS) has re-arrested former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki after his release from the Kuje Prison in Abuja.

The former NSA was said to have been re-arrested by the DSS on Tuesday, December 29, according to Daily Trust.

The development has reportedly been confirmed by Dasuki’s lawyer, Ahmed Raji (SAN).

An agent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier said that the DSS would re-arrest the former NSA after his release on bail.

“We will obey court order to release Dasuki on bail but we may only return him to DSS custody because he was on remand warrant of a Chief Magistrate’s Court, which was obtained by the DSS, when we asked the agency to make him available to us for prosecution,” the EFCC source told The Nation.

"I think the remand warrant may have to do with security issues beyond our purview. In line with inter-agency cooperation, we took custody of Dasuki from the DSS, we will return him there. It is left to Dasuki to approach another court to vacate the remand warrant got by the DSS,” the source added.

Dasuki is being investigated for allegedly supervising the laundering of $2 billion in funds meant for the procurement of arms for Nigeria’s military.

He was initially arrested by the DSS on December 1, 2015 and handed over to the EFCC the following day.

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered the arrest of Dasuki and others indicted in the alleged fraud after receiving a report submitted by a panel instituted by him to probe Nigeria’s arms purchases from 2007-2015.

The former NSA has been in the eye of the storm since being removed by Buhari in July.

His homes in Sokoto and Abuja were raided by agents of the DSS and he was subsequently charged with money laundering and illegal possession of weapons.

The EFCC has also arrested 20 of Dasuki's former staff and Chairman of Africa Independent Television (AIT), Raymond Dokpesi in connection with the allegations.

Dasuki has pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

The EFCC had earlier opposed the former NSA's bail application saying that releasing him would leave him open to attacks from relatives of soldierswho died due to the under-funding of the military.
