Mvoko, a contributing editor for the national news channel SABC News was standing outside a Johannesburg hospital to report on Zambia's president Edgar Lungu's arrival in the country for medical tests when he was accosted by the robbers.
Myoko said he was threatened with a gun when he did not want to give up his mobile phone even as the robbers appeared unconcerned by the presence of the camera.
He would later post a link to the incident on Twitter and it has since gone viral.
Myoko said it took him a while to realise what was happening as it was less than a minute till he was due to go live:
"I couldn't understand why they'd walk right in front of the camera because the light is on and they could see that - and our car is branded, so they could see that this is a live broadcast."
The South Africa National Editors' Forum (SANEF) has condemned the mugging saying in a statement:
"Every South African lives with the reality of crime, but to see thugs brazenly ignoring television cameras and robbing media workers in the course of their work, yet again brings home the level of criminality in our society"
