A man has died on a flight from Portugal to Ireland after becoming violent and biting a passenger who tried to help restrain him.

A man has died on a flight from Portugal to Ireland after becoming violent and biting a passenger who tried to help restrain him.

The 24-year-old was on an Aer Lingus flight from Lisbon to Dublin, which was forced to divert to Cork Airport.

Reports claim the man, believed to be 24 years old, began “biting another passenger” and was later restrained by crew after becoming “extremely violent”.

Medics on board the flight were among those understood to have joined efforts to calm the man, who bit one of those battling to restrain him.

He is believed to have fallen unconscious while the plane was in the air and was pronounced dead at Cork Airport.

Some 170 passengers and crew making the Flight EI 485 journey were interviewed by local police and later transported to Dublin by bus.

Aer Lingus last night issued a statement about the incident saying: “Aer Lingus flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin, diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board.

“There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 17.40 local time.”

A postmortem is due on the man on Monday afternoon.

Aer Lingus meaning "air fleet" is the national flag carrier airline of Ireland. It operates a fleet of mostly Airbus aircraft serving Europe, North Africa, Turkey and North America.

It is Ireland's oldest extant airline, and ranked as one of the safest airlines in the world.
