A man in India died after being buried alive by construction workers who failed to spot he had slipped into a pothole.

Latori Barman, 45, was walking home from a fair in Katni, India, when he fell into a large hole in the middle of the road on Friday night.

The 45-year-old was knocked out and slumped at the bottom of the hole, but workers failed to spot him and began pouring hot road surfacing material over him.

The tragedy only came to light when residents of the village of Sleemanabad noticed a hand sticking out from the resurfaced road.

The man’s body was exhumed from beneath the road and sent for a post-mortem examination.

An investigating officer told the Times of India: “It was dark and there were no warning signs.

“He would have been walking in an inebriated condition when he fell into the pit between Udlana and Hata village and lost consciousness.

“Workers must not have noticed him while filling the pothole with bitumen.”

Police said the man’s next of kin will be given 50,000 rupees as compensation and an investigation has been launched.
