It's not uncommon for countries to warn their citizens about the potential risks involved with travelling to countries owing to security or even health concerns.

This time, the United States has issued a travel warning to its citizens about travelling to Europe this summer.

According to the US state department, there is a "risk of potential terrorist attacks throughout Europe, targeting major events, tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers and transportation"

Ending on on August 31, 2016, the alert goes on to say that "the large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events."

France is set to play host to the month-long Euro Cup this July, which is a month-long series of football tournaments that rival the World Cup and Olympics in terms of attention.

Also, Poland will host the Catholic Church's World Youth Day this July as well. Both events could therefore be susceptible to attacks, according to the statement.

The travel warning is coming on the heels of terror attacks in France and Brussels in earlier months.
