Micro-blogging site rumored to increase character limit from 140 to 10,000 characters

On Tuesday, new reports surfaced in the Wall Street Journal that the micro-blogging site has plans to expand the character limit to as much as 10,000 characters.

Twitter Co-founder and newly announced CEO Jack Dorsey

Since September last year when the first rumors surfaced that Twitter could be expanding its 140-character limit, the rumors have refused to die down.

Since the rumor first broke, there has been various reactions on the Twitter platform itself with majority of users kicking against the character increase with the view that it could disrupt the real-time, speedy nature of the platform.

Twitter has been trying to increase user growth and engagement since co-founder, Jack Dorsey, returned as CEO in July, 2015.

In response to the rumors, Dorsey tweeted a cryptic message explaining the rationale behind the need for an increase to the character limit. He however didn’t state any specifics as regards how many characters will be added to the current 140 characters.

Twitter has already increased the Direct Message limit to 10, 000 characters.
