Sneaker giant launches HyperAdapt 1.0 self-lacing shoes

Nike announced the shoe on Wednesday at the Nike Innovation Summit and it will be the first shoe to take advantage of Nike adaptive lacing (self-tying) technology

Nike has announced a mass production shoe that will feature real-life power laces - laces that auto-tighten - called the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0.

Nike announced the shoe on Wednesday at the Nike Innovation Summit and it will be the first shoe to take advantage of Nike adaptive lacing (self-tying) technology, which the company says will be an entirely new platform for sneakers.

That means that someday Jordan's, Air Max's, and FlyKnit shoes could all be built on the company's adaptive lacing platform.

In  the launch announcement, Nike said the shoe will serve as a way to reduce the typical athete concern - distraction.

As such, to save wearers time, as soon as you step into the shoe, it will self-tighten automatically.

“Your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” says Tiffany Beers, Technical Lead of the project. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

The shoes will launch in three colors during the holiday season this year. Pricing has not been announced for the shoes yet, but the company says it will only be available for sale to members of Nike+, the company's new all-in-one product and events app.
