Telecoms giant set to battle DSTv after acquiring Pay-TV license

MTN will be able to use part of the 700 MHz spectrum to provide pay TV services while the payout from the deal could provide the NBC with the much-needed funds to effect the digital switch-over.

NBC DG, Prince Emeka Mba

Several media reports have revealed that MTN Nigeria is diving into the Digital Pay TV services after the company successfully acquired digital pay TV broadcasting  rights from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for a reported N34 billion.

Although there has not been an official statement from MTN Nigeria regarding the news, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek reports that NBC DG, Emeka Mba, hinted at it during his world media briefing in Lagos last week.

The report says the move is beneficial for both parties as MTN will be able to use part of the 700 MHz spectrum to provide pay TV services while the payout from the deal could provide the NBC with the much-needed funds to effect the digital switch-over.
