Don’t get excited yet though, the new OS is only available for Google Nexus devices right now since they have stock Android on them.
However, if you do have an Android device that uses Google's stock OS, then you are also in luck.
Surprisingly though, the new Android Nougat OS announcement does not come with any new hardware as Google has traditionally done in recent years.
Right now, the Nougat OS will be available first on the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and Pixel C over the air (OTA) in the coming days.
However, not all Nexus owners should be rejoicing yet. The Nexus 5 line is being ended officially and as such will not be able to partake in the Nougat experience.
In Android Nougat, Google is implementing some new features and improving on some of the features that are carried over from the earlier Marshmallow OS.
Doze, the feature first introduced in Android 6.0 Marshmallow that recognizes when an Android device is not in use and subsequently powers down the device, has been improved.
With Doze to Go, which will be available on Android 7.0 Nougat, the feature will go into action using the devices sensors to tell when the user is on the move.
Android devices will also be able to display two apps side by side in a windowed format for the first time ever. There is also a new gaming API, called Vulkan, with high performance graphics, and built-in support for VR.
Also available is a new boot process called Direct Boot, some new emojis and an updated notification shade.
Google may be announcing a new Android OS without a new Nexus device for the first time but a new device will definitely be available before the end of the year.
Leaks and rumors in recent times have pointed towards HTC as the next manufacturer of the upcoming Nexus phone even though there hasn't been any official statement from Google.
In other related developments, the honor of the first Android device to sport Android 7.0 Nougat will go to the LG V20 smartphone. LG has already confirmed this with a new image on its website.
