Boko Haram Can't Stop Education In North — Shekarau

People in northern Nigeria will continue their quest for education despite Boko Haram attacks on educational institutions in the region

The continuous attacks by Boko Haram insurgents on educational institutions in the North will not deter the people of the region from acquiring education.

Nigeria's Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau stated this when he led a Federal Government delegation to commiserate with the victims of Wednesday's attack at the Federal College of Education, Kano.

“But I believe this incident will not deter our people from pursuing their studies," Shekarau said.

In the daring attack, carried out by two suicide bombers and other gunmen, 17 people lost their lives — 13 students, a lecturer, an infant and the two suicide bombers, while a further 34 persons  sustained various degrees of injuries.

The Minister called for improved security in  the schools, adding that it is the "responsibility of everybody” to give a helping hand.

“We hope heads of various schools across the country will come up with some stringent measures for maximum security in their respective schools and it is unfortunate that the trend we are witnessing is that institutions of learning are being targeted.

“The issue of security is not the affairs of only the Federal, state or local governments or communities but the responsibility of everybody,” he said.

Kano has been targeted by terrorist many times, most recent of which, before Wednesday's attack, was the 30th of July bomb explosion at the Kano Polytechnic which killed 8 students.

Shekarau, the immediate past governor of Kano state, was sworn in as Minister of Education on the 7th of July, 2014 place of Supervising Minister of Education Nyesom Wike.
