At least 48 students have died after a bomb exploded at the Government Comprehensive Senior Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe State, today (Monday), Telegraph reports.
UPDATE: 48 Students Feared Killed In Yobe School Bomb Blast
An early morning suicide bomb attack on a government school in Potiskum, Yobe state, has left about 48 students dead. Reports say the suicide bomber entered the school dressed as a student with the bomb in a backpack.
Student Pulse gathered that a suicide bomber dressed as a student carried the bomb into the school in a backpack.
Though no official casualty figures have not been given, Telegraph reports that 13 bodies had been taken to hospital with more than 30 others left "with various degrees of injuries".
A teacher in the school quoted by Telegraph said the blast happened about 7:30 am during the morning assembly session.
"The students had gathered for the morning assembly when something exploded in their midst with a thunderous sound at exactly 7:50 am (0650 GMT),"the unnamed teacher said.
"The explosion has affected many students but I can't say how many because we are now evacuating the victims to the hospital which is just 100 metres away."
Another source, a medic at the Potiskum General Hospital, told Telegraph that scores of students have been admitted.
"We are still receiving casualties from the school which is a stone's throw from here," the medic said.
"Our priority now is to save the injured, so we have not started a headcount of the victims."
Potiskum has witnessed several attacks from Boko Haram insurgents since the inception of their struggle for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria.
On November 4, a suicide bomb blast targeting a Shia religious ceremony killed at least 15 people.
Attacks on schools have been a major highpoint of the Boko Haram sect, whose campaign has been based on anti-Western education.
In a daring February attack on a government school in Buni Yadi, at least 40 students were killed.
