Nigerians get certificates without education from foreign universities – Ambassador
Many Nigerian students who travel outside the country for foreign degrees end up at institutions that give them certificates without education, says Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Ademola Onafowokan.
The Ambassador said this while speaking at the the Sixth Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit (ISDS) hosted by the University of Ibadan (UI) in collaboration with the African Sustainable Development Network (ASUDNET) and Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions Network (NSDSN).
He faulted the rush for foreign certification, noting that many of the institutions in Nigeria offer better education.
“I have been around the world – and I have been on this job for about 34 years – the worst I have seen was that of a medical school where Nigerians study.
"It is just like a boy’s quarter of about three to four rooms and this is a medical school; that is where they study; and they are Nigerian students.
"And you can imagine, Nigerians just in a bid to get certificates send their children there.
"They don’t get education, they get certificates."
Onafowokan parents to consider the options within the country.
"There are universities in Nigeria where Nigerians can get quality education, so parents should think twice before sending their children abroad for education.”
The week-long summit is themed “The Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda: Whither Africa.”
