The Nigerian Universities Commission has now directed that medical students in the country will spend a total of 11 years in the university.
'Medical students to spend 11 years in university'
The first four years will be spent studying basic sciences in the university.
Professor Chiedu Mafiana who spoke on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary Professor Julius Okojie at the maiden matriculation and inauguration of the University of Medical Science, Ondo State confirmed this development.
Mafiana broke down the duration of medical study, saying the first four years will be spent studying basic sciences in the university while the next seven years will be spent at the medical school. He added that this will adequately prepare them for the future.
Also speaking at the event, governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko said he is very optimistic about the institution's objective of providing sound training for medical students.
He said, “it is our hope and belief that it will provide sound scientific, technological and professional training to address identified health needs and problems, solve them within the context of community and national needs and sustainable development.”
234 students matriculated in what is said to be the first specialized medical university in Nigeria and the second in Africa.
