Return our school before you leave office, proprietor begs Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola has been urged to return Metropolitan College, one of the schools seized by the Lagos government in 1976, to the original owners, Akaix West Africa Limited, before his tenure ends.

Representatives of Akaix West Africa Limited, the original owners of Metropolitan College, have asked Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to return one of their schools before his tenure ends.

Fashola is set to handover to the newly elected government of governor-elect Akinwunmi Ambode, on the 29th of May and the proprietors want the release of their school to be effected before then.

In a letter addressed to Fashola and signed by one Malcolm Omirhobo, one of the lawyers representing Akaix West Africa Limited, the governor was urged to comply with the Education (Private Secondary Institutions Special Provisions (Repeal) Law of Lagos State which mandated the return of private secondary schools in the state to their owners for effective management.

Omirhobo noted that bureaucracy in the Education Ministry may prevent the return of the school after the handover.

He that all other private schools had been returned to their owners, adding after the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2011 repealed the 1976 Education (Private Secondary Institutions Special Provisions) Law that saw the takeover of 48 Private Secondary Schools from their owners, including Metropolitan College, by Military Government of Lagos State.

With the law repealed, all 48 private schools, with the exception of Metropolitan College, were returned.

Omirhobo urged the governor to ensure that the matter is resolved before May 29 and return the entire school to the owners.
