Eguridu indicts Nigerian parents, schools as Ghanaians get best WAEC result for 3 consecutive years

Nigerian parents have been indicted for not motivating their wards to excellence after students from Ghana produce the best result in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the third consecutive year.

The Head of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) National Office in Nigeria, Charles Eguridu, said it is unfortunate that that Nigerians could not break their West African neighbours dominance.

"Over the past three years, candidates from Ghana have remained the best; it is saddening considering our population,’’ Eguridu said.

He blamed Nigerian parents who have failed to encourage their children and the poor educational system.

""We have been paying lip service to teachers; some schools do not have facilities; candidates do not have laboratories, vocational centres, libraries and textbooks.

"It is not that Nigerians are less intelligent but we do not motivate our children; the love and quest for material things has taken over the level of responsibility in many homes."

In March, three teenage Ghanaian students; 17-year-old Hasan Michail and two 18-year-olds, Kenyah Blaykyi, and Archibald Enninful Henry, won all the three awards for the for the 2014 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at the Council's 63rd Annual Council meeting.

The trio beat over 2 million other candidates from Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
