Why this private school produces the most employable graduates

One of Nigeria's first private Universities has now become one of the best schools in the entire country.

The first Annual survey released by Stutern, has shown that graduates of Covenant University are currently the most employable in Nigeria at the moment.

Based on the study, this school"has more employed graduates according to the employment status of their graduates".

The report was carried out with students who graduated from 2010 to 2016. The conversations we'll have around this survey will be very very interesting. According to the survey, Covenant University has an employability rate of 90%.

The biggest question is metrics. What tools were used in taking this survey? What is the distribution of feedback collected from this survey?  According to the survey

For instance, the largest employer of labour in Nigeria is the Federal Government. How does this data collected adequately cater for graduates who ended up working with the Federal Government in different parastatals?

We asked Kehinde Ayanleye, Co-Founder of Stutern to help us clear these issues.

Here's what he said:

"We tried our best to even and circulate distribution. We also sent to the administrative offices of several universities in all regions. We have slightly higher respondents from one region compared to the other. South-West was higher and others were slightly equivalent across board. The goal in the next edition is to capture a wider scope."

Considering that this is the first edition and the report is likely to become more robust as Stutern grows and extends their reach. The future of this data is exciting.

But back to Covenant University.

The reasons students from this school are likely to be highly employable are quite apparent, for starters, the infrastructural side of things seems to be working out pretty well for them. Covenant University has since inception around the dawn of Nigeria's democracy, set the pace for Nigerian schools, innovating every time, and staying ahead of the pack.

The Online University Portal is a good example. Covenant University was a pioneer in this regard. But all of these points to these factors;

Funds. Management. Funds.

A Computer Science graduate from Covenant University would have paid over 1.2 million naira. What he will get here is a strict, and properly implemented educational program that naturally puts him at an advantage to students from other schools in Nigeria.

Its why despite the constant controversy surrounding the University's Chancellor, Pastor Oyedepo, new students flock in every year for a  bit of that spice.

Students who can afford these schools also have something else working in their favour, which is literally the coup de grace;

The Demographic Advantage.

When a person has access to funds that are available to less than 10% of the Nigerians, you almost always have access to opportunities.

The demography of students of Covenant University is dominated mostly by Upper-Middle Class and High Class families. It's no surprise that almost 50% of the people who took this survey found employment through personal contacts.

Will this even out any time soon?

Nope. Not any time soon. As long as  government-run Universities doesn't have well-oiled systems like private Universities like Covenant, or Babcock, these percentiles won't even out. Let's not even begin to talk about the connections part.
