Refuse take over National Stadium, Lagos

The National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos which is to be home to the Super Eagles of Nigeria has been taken over by refuse.

According to a report by the , not less than five refuse heaps have been spotted at different locations within the National Stadium complex, Lagos, leaving the sport city environment filthy and unhealthy for users of the facility.

The NAN report reveals that the refuse were seen at the weightlifting gymnasium, opposite the mechanic workshop, behind the main bowl and by the legacy pitch, as well as the boxing gymnasium/secretariat.

Some of the athletes and coaches who use the stadium, decried the state to NAN.

They told NAN that the present state of the complex was not good enough and could pose health hazards to users of the stadium.

One of those that spoke to NAN, Okechukwu Elendu who uses the facility for exercise said the refuse dumps at stadium is dangerous to health.

Mr. Elendu described the scenes as an eyesore and condemn those who heap refuse at the stadium.

Reacting to the ugly development, The National Stadium Manager Abolore Alanamu revealed that tractors used by cleaners to dispose wastes were no longer in use as the engines had since packed up.

He further revealed that cleaners now use wheel barrows to move the refuse from the stadium to the dump site.

“Although our tractors are bad but we have a way of managing the dirt collected by cleaners, but we have issues with waste baskets because they are always missing,’’ he said.

The multi-purpose stadium in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria was built in 1972 and was used mostly for football matches until 2001.

It hosted several international competitions including the 1980 African Cup of Nations final, the 2000 African Cup of Nations final, and FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. It also served as the main stadium for the 1973 All-Africa Games.
