How Super Eagles goalkeeper Uzoho performed against Poland

A Pulse Analysis on how Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho fared against Poland.

The Super Eagles goalkeeping unit has been one of Gernot Rohr’s biggest headache since his known number one Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Before the game against Poland on Friday, March 23, Rohr had used three different goalkeepers without a clear first choice ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Recent events have however suggested that will be Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup.

Since making his debut in the second 45 minutes of the 4-2 win over Argentina in November, Super Eagles boss has evidently paid more attention to the 19-year-old goalkeeper.

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Pionetti Enrico was in February sent to Spain to train with Uzoho and with other goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi missing, he played the whole 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Poland on Friday.

And Rohr is also satisfied with his performance in the game.

“At the moment I’m satisfied with the young one (Uzoho). Before he arrived we were a young team and he’s here now and it’s good for the future,” Rohr said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the friendly game against Serbia on Tuesday, March 27.

“Other players in the team are helping him to do well in terms of positioning during corners.”

This is another indication that Rohr already has his mind set on Uzoho ahead of the World Cup.

But how did Uzoho perform against Poland?

Uzoho had a very nervy start against Poland but managed to rush out well early on to prevent Robert Lewandowski from taking out time to shoot after he had escaped Leon Balogun.

The Polish dominated the Super Eagles in set pieces and Uzoho had problems very early in the game.

He came out strong to punch out a corner in the 29th minute but in the 36th minute he rushed out to catch a freekick but missed, luckily for him,  the ball went out for a goal kick.

In the 43rd minute, his mistake almost cost the Super Eagles as he completely missed another freekick after rushing out. The ball went over the line but Balogun was there to quickly clear before the referee could have spotted it.

With the help of VAR, that would have been a goal.

In the second half, Uzoho’s nerves were steady and he became more composed.

He came out well in the 69th minute to deal with a freekick, minutes later he guarded his post so well and did well not to go for a ball across his area which later went out for a goal kick.

Weaknesses

Uzoho started the game very nervously, but this is understandable, the friendly game being his first Super Eagles start.

On so many occasions also he rushed out too quickly and mistimed the ball, putting his team in danger of conceding a goal.

He also failed to command his area well during set pieces especially in the first half although he got better as the game went on.

Uzoho's distribution was also poor against Poland as he struggled to find teammates. He also didn't seem to put enough kick on his pullouts that oftentimes didn't get past the centre circle enabling the Polish to quickly get the ball and attack the Super Eagles.

Strengths

Uzoho showed strong hands in the game against Poland which helped him to clear some balls during set pieces.

He got better with his area and was very vocal. He was seen shouting at a teammate who had allowed a Polish player to get on a ball from a free kick.
