Onye wins only medal for Nigeria at IPC Championships

Achondroplasia is a short-limbed dwarfism, according to the IPC classification. Athletes are grouped under classes T40 (track events) and F40 (field events).
 
 

Lauritta Onye won Nigeria’s only medal, clinching gold at the just-concluded 7th IPC Athletics World Championships, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The championships held from Oct. 22 to Oct. 31 at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

The Nigerian defeated Lara Baars of Netherlands, who placed second and Rima Abdelli of Tunisia, who won bronze in the achondroplasia competition.

The maximum height of 145 cm is required for male athletes and 140cm for female athletes.

The Para-athletics Federation of Nigeria (PFN) registered seven athletes for the championships.

The People's Republic of China topped the chart with 41 gold, 26 silver and 18 bronze medals, while the Russian Federation came second with 24 gold, 21 silver and 24 bronze medals.

The U.S. placed third with 13 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze medals.
