Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

In Sikhism we firmly believe that the Holy Congregation are just as holy as God or The Guru themselves.

Sikh Hukam

Saarang, Fifth Mehla:

The Dear Lord is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

The mortal does evil deeds, and hides from others, but like the air, the Lord is present everywhere. ||1||Pause||

You call yourself a devotee of Vishnu and you practice the six rituals, but your inner being is polluted with greed.

Those who slander the Society of the Saints, shall all be drowned in their ignorance. ||1||

The mortal eats the food which he has carefully prepared, and then steals the wealth of others. His inner being is filled with falsehood and pride.

He knows nothing of the Vedas or the Shaastras; his mind is gripped by pride. ||2||

He says his evening prayers, and observes all the fasts, but this is all just a show.

God made him stray from the path, and sent him into the wilderness. All his actions are useless. ||3||

He alone is a spiritual teacher, and he alone is a devotee of Vishnu and a scholar, whom the Lord God blesses with His Grace.

Serving the True Guru, he obtains the supreme status and saves the whole world. ||4||

What can I say? I don't know what to say. As God wills, so do I speak.

I ask only for the dust of the feet of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. Servant Nanak seeks their Sanctuary. ||5||2||

This Hukamnama is written by the Fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The anniversary of the martyrdom of the 5th Guru was also commemorated this week on 22nd May 2015. It is stated in Sikhism many times that the path to living an honest and true life is not just to do good ritualistic actions but to eliminate the evil within us from the very source.

Thinking bad thoughts are the seed to doing bad, even if on the surface we seem like good people, The Almighty knows what others do not. There is reference here to the common rituals which are commonly carried out in the Hindu faith in the name of a particular deity or demi-god, and these rituals are seen as a longer or unnecessary route to God as it does not demonstrate true love for The Almighty.

The Tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji stated that wherever there are at least five Baptised Sikhs he will be standing with them in Spirit. There is also a reference to the will of God explaining to us that only those people are True saints who have been blessed by Gods Will and outside of his Will no individual can suddenly become a Saint.

The True Guru in Sikhism is God, yet all Sikhs see their Physical Guru on Earth as the light of God.

In essence the only way to truly meet God is through humility and this is demonstrated through the way in which The Guru has called himself ‘Servant Nanak’ (The Guru’s in Sikhism are also referred to as Nanak’s as they are spiritually descended from the 1st Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.)
