AIT demands N100bn damages from APC leader

Tinubu had earlier demanded N20 billion in damages and threatened to sue the network for airing a documentary which he described as defamatory to his person.

The management of the African Independent Television (AIT) has demanded the sum of N100bn damages from the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

Daar Communications Plc, AIT’s parent company, has however rejected Tinubu’s claim and filed a counter-claim of its own.

In a letter from the company’s lawyers, Mike Ozekhome Chambers, Tinubu’s demands were described as laughable.

The lawyers stated that AIT, in transmitting the documentary, was only carrying out its constitutional responsibility to uphold the fundamental objectives of the constitution.

A statement from the company reads:

“DAAR communications PLC is therefore demanding a complete withdrawal of the letter under reference, which must be given wide publicity as that accorded the letter from the chambers of Tunji Abayomi.”

“The media company demands an apology to be published in at least four leading national newspapers and four television stations, which must include NTA, Channels and AIT.”

“The sum of one hundred billion Naira representing aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages for the irreparable injury inflicted on AIT is also being demanded.”

Tinubu’s lawyers claimed that their client’s reputation had been damaged by the documentary despite the fact that he was not contesting for any political office.
