Senate President Shuts Down National Assembly

Mark has said that both the Senate and the House of Representatives will remain shut till Tuesday, November 25. The Senate President also described the invasion as “very unfortunate.”

The Senate President, David Mark has today, November 20 shut down the National Assembly after the complex was invaded by armed security personnel.

The National Assembly complex was besieged by security officers, who were reportedly there to prevent the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal from gaining entry.

Tambuwal was tear gassed along with other legislators but was eventually smuggled in by his supporters who managed to overpower the security operatives.

The speaker’s media aide, Imam Imam gave details of the incident via Twitter. He tweeted:

“Serious fight at NASS gate. Hon members insist Tambuwal must be allowed access to the premises.”

“Hon members, across party line and national divide, demobilised the locked door and speaker is now in the premises.”

“Speaker makes attempt to enter the House Chamber but was denied. Tear gas are being used at the moment. Speaker shielded by about 40 members.”

“Members, with the aide of NASS staff and aides,  finally make their way into the Chamber.”

“Tear gas all over NASS premises. Members looking for water to ameliorate. NASS staff shouting 'no more police. Tambuwal must stay.”

“Two aides of Speaker have fainted on the impact of tear gas. Efforts to revive them on now.”

“Other members have now arrived. All shouting solidarity songs. Speaker Tambuwal on seat presiding.”
