High court grants Senator N100,000 bail

Melaye was also asked to provide a surety who must not be below grade level 14 in the Federal Civil Service.

Sen. Dino Melaye has been granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama.

The lawmaker was arraigned on Thursday, March 1, 2018, for allegedly giving false information to the Police.

In April 2017, Melaye claimed that some assassinsstormed his country home in Kogi state and tried to kill him.

Justice Olasumbo Goodluck, granted the lawmaker bail after listening to the submissions of his counsel, Mr Ricky Tarfa (SAN) and the prosecution.

The surety is also expected to provide proof of residence in the Federal Capital Territory.

The case was also adjourned to May 16 and May 17, 2018, for commencement of trial.

Punishment

Melaye’s alleged offenceare said to be punishable under sections 140 and 393 of the Peal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.

The Senator, who is currently enmeshed in several legal suits will have to defend his innocence in the fresh suit filed by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

According to Cable News, Dino Melaye displayed a bottle of coke, tissue paper, toothbrush and toothpaste to journalists after he was granted bail.

The Senator said that he came to court prepared, adding that he is ready to go to prison.
