President To Extend Emergency Rule In North-East

President Goodluck Jonathan's request was approved by the National Defence Council on Monday, November 17.

President Goodluck Jonathan is set to extend the emergency rule which is currently in place in the troubled states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

The president’s request was approved by the National Defence Council on Monday, November 17.

According to the Attorney General, Mohammed Adoke, Jonathan will proceed to seek final approval from the National Assembly.

“The council reviewed the issue of the state of emergency and the government will be requesting the National Assembly to extend the emergency rule. It will go in immediately,” Adoke said.

Boko Haram has unleashed a horrific wave of violence on the three states since the insurgency began leaving thousands dead and many more displaced.

The emergency rule, which should ordinarily run for six months, was first put in place on May 14, 2013 and has been extended twice by the president.
