Actress talks return to Nollywood after 13-year break

Since her return in 2009, Omoni Oboli has directed "Being Mrs Elliott," "The First Lady," "Wives on Strike," "Okafor's Law" which is set to premiere at TIFF 2016.

In a recent interview, the actress spoke on her return to Nollywood, the journey to the top, and her upcoming movie "Okafor's Law," which is set to premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.

Speaking on making her return in 2009, Oboli said "I did "Figurine" and "Anchor Baby" shortly after I came back, the two movies made weighty impacts in the then returning cinema culture."

According to the actress, she chose to go for the unique roles, ‘’I decided to take the more difficult but surer route to where I wanted, which is the route of ‘only good quality jobs,' she said.

"I decided with my husband and team then that if the movie production did not spark my interest in terms of a goodstoryline and high production value, I won’t do it. It cost me a lot as I wasn’t doing as many jobs as many of my colleagues then. Often, even when the money offered was very attractive, I turned down roles because the movieproduction was not what I wanted’’.

The movie has been selected asundefinedthat will screen at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival as part of its City to City programme.Speaking on the nomination, the actress said "The selection of Okafor’s Law, which is my most ambitious movie ever as an actress, producer and director, makes me emotional and nostalgic. I remember the many nights and days of sacrifices, going the extra mile and not getting enough credit. The TIFF selection is a form of validation for my work and I am grateful to God’’.

"Okafor’s Law" is a comedy about a married woman who ran into her past love and had to contend with the legendary Okafor’s Law to save herself and her marriage.

A star-studded movie, it stars Richard Mofe Damijo, Toyin Aimakhu, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Ken Erics, Ufuoma McDermott, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Yvonne Jegede, Halima Abubakar, Mary Lazarus, Uche Nnaji, Betty Irabor, Tina Mba, Tina Mba, Gabriel Afolayan, and Funke Bucknor.

Oboli who made her directorial debut with the movie "Being Mrs. Elliot," has since directed successful movies like "The First Lady," which won the Audience Choice Award at the 2016 edition of Nollywood Week Film Festival.
