The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra on Tuesday said it had impounded 133.4 Kilogrammes of hemp in Onitsha Main Market.

The NDLEA commander said that the drugs were brought into the state, mostly through the River Niger, from Asaba.

Mr Sule Momodu, the state Commander of NDLEA, told newsmen in Awka that the drug was seized from a suspect (names witheld).
He said that another three suspects (names withheld) were also in the agency's custody.

Momodu said that 150.535 kilogrammes of drugs were impounded in July in the state including cocaine, heroin and hemp.
He urged the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to fulfil his promise of providing the agency with speed boats-- for effective patrol of the waterways.
Momodu said that the agency’s four boats had been grounded.
According to him, any society wishing to reduce crime should first of all fight illicit drug usage.

"No crime can be committed without the suspects being first involved in illicit drugs.’’
He said that the judiciary was not helping matters in the punishment of drug offenders.
Momodu said extant laws had 15 years minimum jail term for drug offenders, regretting that most judges had not complied with the statute.
"Rather, they were giving as ridiculous as six months jail term to such offenders,’’ he said.

The NDLEA official said that the agency secured two convictions from the Federal High Court, Awka, against drug offenders in July.
