Security agencies to tackle piracy, militancy

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone 6 Command, Tunde Ogunsakin, on Monday, said that a joint zonal security task force would soon be inaugurated to tackle the spate of piracy and militancy in the South-South.

This is contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesman, ASP Rogers Elebe, and made available to newsmen.

The statement said that the task force would comprise: the Commissioners of Police in-charge of Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers states.

Others were the Commandant 13 Brigades of the Nigerian Army, the Commander, Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) Victory, Calabar , 207 Mobility Group of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the state directors of the Directorate of State Security (DSS).

The statement said this was arrived at during a meeting held on Sunday and attended by the deputy governors of those states and head of security agencies.

The statement said the meeting was to fine-tune the fight against criminalities in the zone.

The objective of the meeting was to form a Zonal Task Force to combat militant attacks on persons and government facilities along the waterways, it said.

The statement said that the zone would work out the modalities for a joint operation room to coordinate the activities of the task force.

The statement quoted Ogunsakin as saying that the task force would deploy technologically-driven intelligence mechanism to actualise its goal.
