69 burnt to death in fuel tanker explosion

The tanker was said to be coming from Awka and heading towards Asaba when it break failed and rammed into the populated Asaba motor Park, killing dozens.

 

Tragedy struck at Asaba motor park, Onitsha, Anambra State today, Sunday May 31, as dozens were burnt to death after the break of a trailer loaded with fuel failed and rammed into cars and people.

The tanker was said to be coming from Awka and heading towards Asaba when it break failed and rammed into the populated and busy Asaba motor park. It exploded upon impact.

According to the Nigerian Red Cross Society officials, 69 persons were burnt to death beyond recognition.

The Red Cross Chairman Professor Peter Emeka Kathy said, “we have sixty nine burnt to dead persons as at now, there are other 30 casualties, a casualty is a living person, a dead person is no longer a casualty, so 69 persons are dead, and they have been evaluated to various mortuaries in Onitsha, from Toronto to St Charles Boromneo Mortuaries and others in town”.
