"I prefer to die fighting corruption," EFCC boss says

Magu expressed his commitment to the war against corruption, saying he would sacrifice his life, if need be, to see the end of graft in Nigeria.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss-Ibrahim Magu.

The acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has again expressed his commitment to the war against corruption, saying he would sacrifice his life, if need be, to see the end of graft in Nigeria, The Cable reports.

He stated playing host to a group of lawyers who paid him a solidarity in Lagos yesterday, February 18.

Appreciating the visit, Magu said the commission needs support from every patriotic Nigerian, as the battle against corruption enters a delicate phase where the vice is itself fighting back.

“I am not afraid of anything. I prefer to die fighting corruption if need be,” he stated.

He said it is unfortunate that some senior lawyers have “joined forces with fraudsters and those who looted our commonwealth by becoming coaches and technical advisers on how to escape justice”.

The EFCC boss urged lawyers to allow the interest of Nigeria and good conscience to guide them when accepting briefs.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, who led the group had said they were at the agency to express support for its activities and thank its chairman for revamping the fight against corruption.

“Let us name and shame corrupt judges and lawyers. The good ones are prepared to work with you,” Falana said.

Also speaking at the meeting, Luke Aghanenu said the EFCC should expect that corruption would also fight back, as shown by the recent attack by some lawyers.

He criticised the activities of some lawyers who are attacking the EFCC, and urged them not to hide under the cover of lawyer-client confidentiality to become accomplices to huge corruption.
