Yunusa served teenager’s family for 10 years

This was revealed to Vanguard by the suspect’s father, Dahiru Bala, in an exclusive interview.

Mr. Bala said he was not in support of the marriage because they he had already arranged for a bride for Yunusa in the village.

He also added that Ese was converted to Islam on her request.

Bala said “Yunusa was a domestic help to Oruru’s family for 10 years and when he told me of his love relationship with Ese, I opposed him because we already have a bride for him in the village.”

He also said “The relationship between my son and Ese was built on ignorance of their religious background which made it difficult for any of us to support their marriage proposal."

“Sequel to the request of Ese, she was converted to Islam on the order of the District Head before he was taken to the Emir’s palace for his final say.”

“On arrival at the Emir’s palace, a senior counsellor who took the brief summon the Sharia Commission to take custody of Ese Oruru till the arrival of the emir the next day,” Yunusa’s father said.

He said when the Emir ordered that Ese be returned home, she broke down in tears claiming that her life will be endangered if she returns home.

Bala also said the police had to delay her return, so they could investigate her claims.

Ese Oruru has since been rescued and reports say she is back in Bayelsa state with her family.
