The victims were said to have been killed after police officers shot at the protesters in Aba on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, according to Vanguard.
“The protesters as usual, gathered at the school to pray before taking off, but soldiers and policemen invaded the area,” a witness told Vanguard.
“There was heavy shooting. I saw more than three dead people. Many others were injured,” he added.
Police officers also reportedly arrested many members of the group, according to an official.
The IPOB protest was organized to condemn the continued imprisonment of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu was arrested in Lagos in October 2015 and is currently being held at the Kuje Prison in Abuja.
He is facing charges of treason and has been denied bail.
