Governor blames Universities for Nigeria’s economic problems

Aregbesola said tertiary institutions should focus on training people in specific areas of strength, rather than provide training in all fields.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola

Aregbesola blamed Universities for the current economic problems Nigeria is facing.

The Osun Governor who has been slammed by his critics for acting like Oliver Twist (the guy who always wants more), when it comes to bail out funds, said tertiary institutions should focus on training people in specific areas of strength, rather than provide training in all fields.

Aregbesola said “Does your society need all the disciplines? The answer is ‘No’. Even if it does, it can be best served when universities specialise in specific areas of learning to help the society.”

He added that “Nigeria no longer needs generalist universities any more but universities that will carve a niche for themselves in specific areas of societal needs. Universities should therefore begin to equip students with capacities to enable them engage these areas of needs.”
