The raid took place at Masjid Swafaa mosque where petrol bombs, grenades and ammunition were recovered.

“We had a security operation at the mosque but we will give you more details later,” Kisauni Police chief Richard Ngatia said of the operation, conducted two days after the Monday morning operation at the Masjid Shuhadaa and Sakina mosques.

A police officer involved in the operation said no suspect was arrested in the latest raid.

According to Capital News, during the Monday raid, over 200 suspects were arrested but only 15 were taken to court on Tuesday. Police said others were interrogated and released.

The suspects were charged for possessing hand grenades and other weapons seized in the mosques.

They were arraigned before Mombasa Senior Chief Magistrate Justus Kituku for being in possession of eight hand grenades.

They pleaded not guilty and were remanded at the Central Police Station awaiting determination of bond applications on Wednesday morning.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku on Tuesday announced that similar raids will be conducted in mosques suspected to be radicalising youths.

“I want to make it clear that houses of worship cannot and shall not be taken over by criminals or used for criminal activities, including terrorism,” Lenku said in a statement.
