Woman arrested for attempted murder of 7-day-old baby

Investigators alleged that the woman abandoned her 7-day-old baby in a storm drain. The baby was rescued days later from the bottom of the drain.

A 30-year-old woman has been arrested and charged for attempted murder after abandoning her 7-day-old baby in a storm drain in Blacktown suburb of Sidney, Australia.

Two bicyclists, Hayley and his daughter Hayley Otte, were on a morning ride on Sunday, November, 23 when they heard the sound of a baby cry from inside a storm drain. They lifted a slab off the storm drain beside the bike trail and discovered a new-born baby boy and handed him over to police.

Police told Seven Network that the baby was extremely lucky to have been found at that time because temperature went below 40 degrees just few hours later, meaning the boy may not have survived.

A search of medical reports revealed that the little boy was born at Blacktown Hospital and his mother was tracked down and arrested. She has been charged with attempted murder.

Investigators alleged the baby, who is 7 days old, was placed in the drain the day after he was born and spent days inside the storm drain before Sunday's rescue.

She has been denied bail; the Penrith Local Court has adjourned the matter to Friday, November 28.
