Notorious female robbers arrested in Akwa Ibom

A gang of female robbers that has been operating in Akwa Ibom State has been snatched with the leaders arrested.

It was the end of the road for the duo of Grace Ekpo and Mfon Daniel, two notorious leaders of an all female robbery gang that has been terrorising Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital and other parts of the state like Ikot Ekpene, Eket and Oron, as they were finally nabbed by operatives of the state Police Command while they were in 'active' duty of robbing a boutique in the capital city.

The gang which has been wrecking havoc in the past few months, robbing shops, boutiques, supermarkets, restaurants and residents in broad daylight, met their waterloo when they attacked a female boutique located at Ekpo Obot Street as they were apprehended as they tried to make their get away in a tricycle popularly called 'Keke'.

According to information, Ekpo and Daniel who had earlier been declared wanted by the police in the state, had stormed the boutique pretending to buy some expensive clothes, bags, wristwatches and other accessories.

After they had gathered the items together, they sent the girl to go buy them some drinks from a nearby shop and when the girl stepped out, they called on their operational 'Keke' and were about to escape when the girl returned and saw them enter the tricycle.

The salesgirl raised the alarm and passersby and other tricycle operators gave the 'Keke' a hot chase and they thieves including the operator of the 'Keke' were nabbed.

It took a helluva time for the police to rescue the from the angry crown that was bent on lynching them, before they were whisked to the state Police Command Headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia.

On interrogation, the two suspects confessed to their crimes, stating that apart from the robbery in which they were caught, they had been involved in all kinds of robbery in the state for long.

"When we enter people shop, anything you sell, we will pack the most costly ones; after which we will ask you to get us water or send you on an errand.

That will make us run away with the goods without paying for it. We rob women in Keke, we pick recharge card bags and anything that would fetch us quick money," Ekpo, the leader of the gang confessed.
