A 24-year-old robbery suspect, Kelechi Ikechi, caused laughter at the Lagos State Police Command where he is being detained, that he robs only on Sunday, officially knocking out God's injunction that people should actually rest on that day.
And uncannily, the Abia State born criminal was arrested on a Sunday during one of such operations at a neighbour's flat in Ejigbo, on the outskirt of Lagos, after the occupiers of the house had gone for Sunday service.
During interrogation, Ikechi confessed to the robbery at one Peter Ibeh’s house, close to his residence.
Before the fateful day, Ibeh had reportedly complained that every Sunday, his house was robbed, which caused serious arguments among his family members. Thus he decided to trace the guilty party.
According to Ibeh, on the day of Ikechi’s arrest, he hid one of his aides inside their flat and went to church with other members of the family. When the suspect broke in, Ibeh’s aide locked him in from outside and raised the alarm which attracted other neighbours.
The weekend robber was caught and handed over to the police.
Speaking about his motives, Ikechi said that he started stealing from people when he lost his factory job. He added that it was reasonable to break into houses on Sundays because people were absent for a long time in churches.
