6 police officers arrested for murder of 33-yr-old man

Six police officers who killed a man extra-judicially have been arrested.

The murdered Emmanuel Orimisan

Finally, the long arm of the law has caught up with six policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, Lagos State, who were fingered in the brutal murder of a 33-year-old man, Emmanuel Orimisan, in the Ilaje-Ajah area of the state, as they have been arrested and are now being detained at the Force Criminal Investigations Department Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi.

The killer policemen were said to have brutally murdered Orimisan, who was an apprentice, on July 21, 2015, after they allegedly trailed some suspected robbers to their alleged hideout in Ilaje community, who had come out of his room when he heard sporadic gunshots.

When the police saw him, they reportedly pumped live bullets into his body, killing him instantly.

After killing the innocent man, the police took away his corpse which they paraded at their office with a gun, claiming he was killed during an exchange of fire with the police and the robbers.

A family source said the arrest of the officers came after the National Human Rights Commission and other human rights groups which put pressure on the police, to reveal the identities of the killer officers.

“There were six policemen who came to the area on that day. All of them are now in custody. Since July, the police slowed down investigations on the matter, but the family kept on writing petitions to the right groups. Eventually, the six of them were picked up last week.

They are in the cell as we speak, and there are indications they will be taken to court before the end of the month.

The boy was neither a cult member nor an armed robber as the policemen initially claimed. He was not married and he lost his father just last year.

They shot him and also took his corpse away from the scene. But after the pressure mounted on the police by rights groups, the officers have now been arrested, and we learnt they will be taken to court very soon,” the source said.
