Woman gives birth to monster looking child in Edo

A woman has thrown a community in Edo State into shock after she gave birth to a strange baby.

The strange baby

The people of Jettu, a community in Edo State, were thrown into shock when a pregnant woman put to bed a strange beast-like baby on Monday, July 11, 2016, at the Hope Hospital, in the area.

According to reports, the new born baby had features of a frog with the head almost totally sunk into the upper part of the body and with extraordinarily large eyeballs literally popping out of the eye-sockets.

According to residents in the area, such a birth was abnormal and there was suspicion that the woman could have committed an abomination like sleeping with another man during her pregnancy, hence the strange birth.

But medical experts believe such birth defects has nothing to do with tradition and could either be caused by wrong medication during pregnancy or that such a mother did not take the proper medications or could have taken harmful substances when she was pregnant.

A medical practitioner, Dr. Yusuf Adewale who spoke to Pulse on the reasons some babies are born with birth defects, said:

"Birth defects are structural or functional abnormalities present at birth that cause physical or mental disability. They are the leading cause of death for infants during the first year of life. Birth defects may be caused by genetic problems, problems with chromosomes, or environmental factors."
