Akon Brings Electricity To 1Million African Homes

If this isn’t generosity, then we don’t know what it is.

Five-time Grammy Awards nominee Akon has launched a partnership though the Akon Lighting Africa initiative to bring electricity to one million households in Africa by the close of 2014.

The famous singer and producer is aimed at improving the living standards of his fellow Africans by first of all addressing one of the immediate needs of the continent – light! The Akon Lighting African project will look into the fact that more than 2/3 of the population of sub-Saharan Africa is without electricity and that above 85% of those living in rural areas lack access.

According to broadwayworld.com, "Akon Corp., in conjunction with GIVE1 PROJECT and Solektra International, member of ADS Group (Africa Development Solutions Group), has assembled a dynamic group of strategic partners in order to create replicable, scalable and cost-effective energy solutions.”

This philanthropic movement which began February 10 this year, is reportedly involving a selected group of heads of state in countries like Senegal, Gambia, Gabon, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Congo, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.

Akon’s delegation includes, Samba Bathily, Solektra International, Thione Niang, Give 1 Project, Wang Lin, CJI, Khadidiatou ThiamAkon Corp. and Dr. Julius W. Garvey. The Akon Corp. began an ambitious tour of nine (9) African nations to engage in dialogue about the project engage leaders and key stakeholders in actionable dialogue to immediately begin addressing Africa's energy issue.
