'I did it for you' - Drug suspect tells fiancee

To show his love for his wife to be and make his wedding one in town, a young man decided to engage in drug trafficking.

For the love he has for his fiancée so as to get money for their traditional wedding, a 39-year-old waiter, Okupe Ernest Ifeanyi, decided to try his luck in the drug trafficking trade and got his fingers burnt when he was nabbed by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, on his way back from Brazil.

Ifeanyi was nabbed with 59 wraps of substance which turned out to be cocaine and was paid a meagre N400,000 to bring in the drugs.

The Anambra State born Ifeanyi who said he worked as a waiter in a Brazilian restaurant before the urge to make extra money so as to make his marriage the talk of the town, confessed that he took the risk because of the love he has for his fiancee.

“I work in a restaurant in Brazil. I sincerely want to get married and have a family. In the process of trying to make more money, I was given 59 wraps of cocaine to take to Nigeria for N400,000.

Now I realised I have made a big mistake. I pray my woman will find a place in her heart to forgive me. I feel I’m under a spell,” the sober Ifeanyi confessed.

Even with the risk involved in drug trafficking, many young Nigerians are still being used as mules and couriers to carry the dangerous substance with many of them being sentenced to death or jailed in different countries abroad.

In August, a Nigerian man, Benjamin Ikechukwu Ejiogu, was sentenced to death for smuggling methamphetamine, a banned drug, worth 3.3 kilograms into the country in 2012.

In May of this year, a 30-year-old female student, Mary George Unazi, was sentenced to death by a Malaysian High Court on Thursday after she was found guilty of trafficking 765.9gm of metamphetamine, also know as crystal meth, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) four years ago.

While another Nigerian, Uzoma Elele Alpha,was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Indonesian Court, after he was caught with banned substances, namely methamphetamine and marijuana, worth an estimated $451,400, (about N104 million).
