Journalist and pop culture enthusiast Osagie Alonge explores the facts of this argument.
In the clip, Alonge categories rap music under hip-hop. He said:
“Hip-hop is universal, we have issues with hip-hop in Nigeria . . . issues with hip-hop in the U.S, but I don’t see any comparison. I don’t see any comparison when you are appealing to a local market while Americans are also appealing to a local market.
"It’s just that hip-hop in America is so big it has filtered into other markets".
This deliberation about rappers was motivated on Twitter by Nigerian rapper M.I Abaga who published a tweet on February 27, 2016 calling for a discussion of hip-hop culture.
Following the release of his album, the Chocolate City boss stated he was on the same level and even better that than the rappers in the States. “There are many great rappers in the states.. I agree with that.. Sirs ..With all humility ..I am as great or greater than 95 percent of them”, he tweeted.
