Actress blasts society's ageist approach to women's beauty

Charlize Theron could be 40 and stunning but even she admits to being a victim to society's ageist approach to women's beauty.

Charlize Theron blasts society's ageist approach to women's beauty

In her interview with the May issue of the British GQ magazine, the South African superstar explains her struggle to be taken seriously in the notoriously ageist and sexist world of Hollywood.

"We live in a society where women wilt and men age like fine wine. And, for a long time, women accepted it. We were waiting for society to change, but now we’re taking leadership." she said.

Adding that, "It would be a lie to say there is less worry for women as they get older than there is for men... It feels there’s this unrealistic standard of what a woman is supposed to look like when she’s over 40."

Charlize originally started out as a model in South Africa before turning to an acting icon in the Unites States and admitted it was quite a fight to avoid being typecast as the pretty female love interest.

"Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story. How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f***ing, gown-wearing eight-foot model?" she explained.

"When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first." she added.

Charlize is known for her incredible movie roles but lately, she's taken up tough roles including acting the wicked queen in 'Snow white and the Huntsman' and 'Imperator Furiosa in the critically acclaimed movie 'Mad Max:Fury Road'.
