Automaker finally joins the business of self-driving cars!

Toyota is the latest car manufacturer to use the autonomous technology.

Toyota's self-driving Highway Teammate car

Last month, Toyota revealed plans to start making smarter cars.

It looks like they doing that with the unveiling of self-driving car called the Highway Teammate, which was just tested on a public road.

The car was a modified Lexus GS and it was tested on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway.

It carried out a range of automated manoeuvres like merging into highways, changing lanes and keeping inter-vehicular distance.

"The car uses multiple external sensors to recognise nearby vehicles and hazards, and selects appropriate routes and lanes depending on the destination. It automatically operates the steering wheel, accelerator and brakes to drive in much the same way as a person would."

Toyota will launch related products "by around 2020".

Other companies with plans for an autonomous vehicle include Google, Nissan, and Tesla.
