The 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) have come and gone.
African music’s biggest night of awards took place last night (June 18), with a number of entertainers getting honoured for their contribution to music on the continent.
Yemi Alade, Davido Psquare, AKA, Cassper Nyovest and many other superstars were happy winners on the night, as the bright lights beamed on them, and they received their gongs.
Nigeria, Africa’s biggest hub of music and pop culture represented in full force, picking a tidy seven awards.

Davido: Best Male Act
Davido won the award as the best male artiste in Africaat the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards.
The Nigerian pop star was recognized on the night, beating Wizkid, South Africa’s AKA, Tanzanian Diamond Platnumz, and Ghana’s Sarkodie.
Yemi Alade: Best Female Act
Yemi Alade has won the award as the best female artiste in Africaat the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards.
The Nigerian star was got announced on the night, beating Seyi Shay, Bucie, Busiswa and Vanessa Mdee.
This honour crowns a successful year for Yemi Alade, which has seen her catapult to the top of African music with her hit single ‘Johnny’, before capitalising on that to churn our more hit songs, and an album, ‘King of Queens’.
Psquare: Best Group, Artiste of the Decade
Psquare were the major winners at the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA).
The duo of Peter and Paul Okoye, won two awards on the big night. They were recipients of the 'Best Group’ award, beating South Africa’s house sensations, Beatenberg, Kenya’s power musicians, Sauti Sol, and Angola’s B4.
They also won a non-voting category, ‘Artiste of the decade’, in recognition of their successful longevity at the top of African music.
This award adds more shine to a glittering career filled with many highs and few public lows. They have released 6 albums, 2 compilations, and featured some of the best in world music.
Patoranking: Best New Act
Patoranking was successful on the night as the star of the 'Best New Act'.
The Foston Music frontman beat other formidable contenders for the gong, including Cassper Nyovest, Duncan, Stonebwoy and Anna Joyce.
Patoranking is curently enjoying another successful year since his breakout in 2014. This just makes it more successful.
D’banj - MTV Evolution Award
Nigerian superstar, D’banj won the 2015 MTV Evolution award.
The veteran singer clinched the award ahead of other African legends such as 2face, Asa, Black Cofee, Chameloen, Fally Ipupa, HHP. Samini and Psquare.
The MAMA “Evolution” award honours established artistes who have made an indelible mark on African and global music culture, taken African music to new territories around the world, pushed the boundaries of creativity, and shaped the soundscape of contemporary Africa.
D’banj dedicated his award to his erstwhile business partner and producer, Don Jazzy, with whom he began his journey as an entertainer, under the defunct Mo’Hits Records.
“I wanna invite thank my father, even though we are not….God bless you Don Jazzy. This award is dedicated to D’banj and Don Jazzy.” D'banj said in an emotion-laded acknowledgement speech.
Mavins: Song of the Year ('Dorobucci')
What's an African award without the Mavins?
The Don Jazzy-led group received due reward for their single, 'Dorobucci', which came out on top as the 'Song of the Year'.
Although this was a shoo in for the gong, it still had to rise above strong contenders including Cassper Nyovest's 'Doc Shebeleza', Lil Kesh's 'Shoki remix', Yemi Alade's 'Johnny'.
Burna Boy: Best Collaboration (AKA, Burnaboy, Da Les & JR: “All Eyes On Me”)
Burna Boy failed to get the nod for the individual category nominations, but his vocal delivery still found a way in, and also picked up an award.
His talent on the hit song 'All eyes on me' with AKA, Da L.E.S and JR, was a major reason for the song getting accepted across the continent.
