Over the weekend, Davido signed a deal with RCA Records.
Photos of Davido at RCA Headqaurters after signing the deal hit the internet, with Sony Music executive, Efe Ogbeni posting the photos on Instagram. Efe Ogbeni, who is extensively involved with operations at RCA wrote in the caption: "Welcome to #RCA @rcarecords @davidoofficial " chairman #peteredge we start the GRIND #afrofusion is here,” and “am all into TEAM WORK @tunji (#brysontiller ) chairman RCA #peteredge Global superstar @davidoofficial his manager.. Brains @kamalajiboye”.
The new act penned a deal with Sony’s Flagship Company to a subsidiary of Sony Records, this past weekend, right before going on to perform at the successful One Africa Music Fest concert which held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. RCA Records, is home to several huge music stars including as Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Zayn Malik, Sia and many more, will handle Davido’s North American music servicing and distribution.
What this means for Davido
Davido was signed in January to Sony Music International, a deal which was well-publicised and passed through all the relevant channels. That deal will involve him making one album, and submitting it to Sony for approval and publishing in various countries including the USA, UK, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, and the rest of the world, excluding Africa. Based on the market performance of this album, Sony has the right to order a second and third album. The deal does not involve Africa, meaning that Davido is free to do whatever he likes with his work on this continent. He might give it out for free on this continent if he chooses to be generous enough.
RCA Distribution
For the USA, and generally North America Davido’s music will not be released directly via Sony Music Entertainment. Rather to get it across all channels, he has handed over to RCA Records, a company under Sony, which also signed up another Nigerian artiste, Ayo Jay this year.
Davido’s sophomore album will not be released this year, but he is working to release an EP. This EP is not part of his deal with RCA, but it will contain collaborations with Tinashe, Trey Songz, and Young Thug.
